Stories on Wood
My canvases are reclaimed from old doors and wood, showcasing their history through the unique wear of color and texture. I embrace their past by following the contours and textures of the surface by way of finger painting with acrylic paint. As images (or Beings, as I like to call them) start to emerge from these foundational finger-painted layers, I intuitively bring them to life by blocking out their forms in oil. I then start the layering process using oil, cold wax, and other mediums to unveil the latest story waiting to be told.
For the paintings that have frames: I designed the frame profiles and worked with a local woodworker to get them just right. I then hand-finished each one to compliment the painting that they house.
Some of my Stories on Wood are paired with narratives I've written, starting with "Once upon a time..." and concluding with "The End." Each story has been handwritten into a handmade book which accompanies the painting upon purchase. To delve into the storytelling behind the art, click the button below.
